The word sustainability is one that has been “borrowed” for political purposes to be used as a synonym for the green movement. While environment is one of the key components of sustainability, it does not tell the whole story.
Sustainability is synonymous with autonomous, maintain, support, endure, self-reliant, and self-sufficiency. Sustainability requires the reconciliation of environmental, social and economic demands – the “three pillars” of sustainability. These “pillars” are not mutually exclusive and can be mutually reinforcing. This concept applies not only in a global sense, but in a microcosm (such as one’s home) as well.
As we see changes in the environmental, societal and economic landscapes, it only stands to reason that the requirements for sustainability also change. I’m not much of a fan of Darwin, but one of his quotes fits very nicely here: “It is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent that survives. It is the most adaptable to change.”
